Now that the excitement of putting on our first fundraising event that was on October 20, 2018 is behind us I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to you for your encouragement and support. Thanks to your generous sponsorship/donation, we were able to put on a world-class event and raise over $10,000 toward ramp donations through Navy Street Charity.

The evening, emceed by celebrated radio show host Drew Marshall and featured key-note addresses from motivational speaker, author, decorated athlete and four-time amputee Unstoppable Tracy, and my personal inspiration, my mother, Mary Longo, who has been wheel-chair bound since I was eight. Our guests included numerous prominent members of the community, celebrated artists and local dignitaries. By all accounts, the event, meticulously planned and executed with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and Board of Directors, was a terrific success.

In addition to the beautiful setting, delicious food, fantastic music and great company, I was touched by how many people approached me and told me they felt it was a truly inspirational and moving evening. Between Unstoppable Tracy and Mary Longo, guests got to hear about two ends of the disability spectrum. When my mother took the floor and talked about how, unlike Tracy, she wasn’t born with a disability and what it was like to, in the same instant, lose her mobility and her sense of self. My mother used to live a full and vibrant life, completely immersed in social activities. When she suddenly developed paraplegia, the invitations stopped coming. She felt that she had suddenly become invisible; there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

October 20th signaled the soft launch of Navy Street Charity. We aspire to double the number of ramps donated in the coming year. To help get there, Navy Street has a dedicated team already planning something special for 2019. The Navy Street Charity Event in 2019 promises to be an event not to be missed and we hope to count you amongst our honoured guests. Until then, be well and thank you again for your encouragement for a cause that is so close to my heart.
